A sportswear company based in Denmark, Hummel International, launched a new soccer jersey with a built-in hijab for Muslim women and members of Afghanistan’s women’s soccer team will now be able to choose whether or not to wear hijabs on field.

This initiative will make it easier for Muslim women to play soccer or any sport really. The hijab is attached to the base-layer shirt so that it is up to the player if she wishes to wear the hijab portion or not.

Take a look at the photos. The new soccer jersey now means Muslim women who choose to wear a headscarf don’t have to avoid playing sports. Also, the company has designed it so it’s safer and less of a hassle for women as hijabs are typically fastened with pins and have been difficult to keep in place during sports.

It was only two years ago FIFA approved players wearing religious head coverage during games but this new sports jersey looks to not only keep players covered but comfortable.

This isn’t the first time we have seen fashion collide with culture. Dolce and Gabbana launched a line of hijabs and abayas earlier this year and Uniqlo launched a collection of Kebaya and hijabs.

With International Women’s Day just recently celebrated, this is another step towards gender equality and religious freedom.

P.S. Hummel’s brand mission statement is “Change the World Through Sport.”

They certainly are.

Here’s a video with more information on the new Hummel collection.
